- Misdemeanor criminal cases punishable by up to one year in jail
- Traffic violations and other civil infractions
- Landlord-tenant matters, including evictions
- Small claims cases involving $6,500 or less
- Land contract forfeitures
District Court is also the starting point for all adult criminal cases, including felonies. In that role, the court is responsible for:
- Issuing arrest and search warrants
- Setting bail and accepting bonds
- Conducting misdemeanor and felony arraignments
- Holding preliminary examinations in felony cases
- Performing marriage ceremonies
Most District Court decisions may be appealed to Circuit Court, though different appeal rules apply to informal traffic infraction hearings.
